Frequently Asked Questions | Buying Your First Horse | Highbrow Ranch

Who is Kate, and what is Highbrow Ranch?

Kate Toomey Evans is a 6x National Champion and World Champion equestrian with more than 20 years of experience helping adult beginners enter the horse world safely and confidently. She's a first-generation horse owner herself — meaning she didn't grow up with horses and had to figure it out the hard way — which is exactly why she built Highbrow Ranch around honest, practical education for people who are new to all of this.

Highbrow Ranch is a 500-acre working ranch in Caldwell, Texas, along the Brazos River. It's where Kate trains and selects horses, works one-on-one with first-time buyers through the consulting experience, and creates educational content for adult beginners across the country.

What does Highbrow Ranch offer?

Three things right now:

  1. The Right Horse Consulting Experience™ — a private 2-day consulting engagement at the ranch for people who are seriously preparing to buy their first horse. You ride 6 hand-selected horses, get Kate's direct assessment of your goals and skill level, and leave with a personalized blueprint for exactly what to buy — and what to avoid.
  2. Horses for sale — Kate trains and carefully selects a small number of luxury beginner-safe horses each year. These are competition-level horses with calm temperaments, suited for adult beginners who want a horse they can grow with.
  3. Online courses (coming soon) — Kate is building a library of online courses and digital tools so that more people can access her approach to horse buying and ownership, regardless of where they live. Join the email list to be first to know when they launch.

Tell me more about the consulting experience.

The Right Horse Consulting Experience™ is a 2-day private intensive at the ranch. You ride 6 hand-selected, competition-level beginner horses. Kate evaluates your current skill level, listens to your goals and lifestyle, and gives you her honest read on what you need — not what's easiest to sell you.

At the end, you leave with a written Right Horse Plan™ — a personalized blueprint that covers what kind of horse to look for, what to prioritize, what to watch out for, and how to evaluate horses you find on your own. You also get 30 days of follow-up access to Kate via email as you shop.

The investment is $3,500. Spots are limited each month so every client gets the level of attention this decision deserves.

Do you offer beginner riding lessons, workshops, or group experiences?

Not currently. The only in-person experience Kate offers at the ranch right now is The Right Horse Consulting Experience™ — a private, one-on-one engagement for people who are actively preparing to buy their first horse.

If you're looking to learn from Kate without coming to the ranch, she creates free weekly content on Instagram (@highbrowranchtx), TikTok (@highbrowranch), and YouTube. Online courses are also in development — join the email list to be notified when they launch.

Do you sell horses?

Yes — carefully and selectively. Kate trains and offers a small number of luxury beginner-safe horses for sale each year. These are not casual sale horses; they're horses she'd personally recommend to her own consulting clients, which is the bar.

When a horse is available, it's listed on the Horses for Sale page. To be notified when a new horse becomes available, join the email list or follow @highbrowranchtx on Instagram or @highbrowranch on TikTok and YouTube.

What kind of horses do you sell?

High-end, beginner-safe horses with real competition-level training. Most are western horses — suited for adult beginners who want a horse they can grow with. Calm temperament, well-broke, honest. Not green, not problem horses, not horses that require an experienced rider to manage. Kate only lists horses she'd put a true beginner on with confidence.

Are online courses coming?

Yes. Kate is building a library of online courses and digital tools so that more people — regardless of where they live — can access honest, practical horse education. The focus will be on first-time buyers: how to evaluate horses, what to look for, how to avoid expensive mistakes, and how to set yourself up for a good experience from day one.
